Many account-based marketing programmes are still judged by a number designed for a different model: lead volume. A campaign generates several hundred contacts, the dashboard looks healthy and the quarterly review moves on.

Yet ABM was never intended to produce leads. Its purpose is to move a defined set of -high-value accounts towards a buying decision. Measuring it by contact volume rewards the wrong behaviour and obscures whether the programme is working at all.

Why Lead Volume Misrepresents ABM Performance

Enterprise purchases are no longer made by individuals. Forrester’s State of Business Buying, 2026 finds that the typical buying decision now involves 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers, with procurement acting as a decision-maker in 53% of buying cycles. A single engaged contact reveals very little about whether that wider group is moving.

The pressure to prove impact is also intensifying. HubSpot’s 2026 State of Marketing report identifies measuring ROI as marketers’ leading challenge, cited by 33% of respondents, while 73% say their budgets face greater scrutiny than in the past. Lead counts rarely withstand that scrutiny, because they cannot be reliably connected to pipeline.

Defining Account Progression

Account progression measures how far, and how quickly, target accounts advance through the buying journey. Rather than asking how many people responded, it asks whether an account has moved from unaware to engaged, from engaged to in-market, and from in-market to an active opportunity.

Gartner’s April 2026 research on ABM measurement reinforces this shift. It advises B2B marketing leaders to adopt metrics distinct from traditional demand generation, to focus on buying group behaviours and to establish a baseline against which incremental lift can be measured.

The Indicators That Signal Genuine Progression

A progression-led view of ABM draws on a small set of account-level indicators:

  • Buying group coverage: the number of relevant roles engaged within each account, rather than the number of contacts captured.
  • Engagement depth: repeat visits, multi-asset consumption and participation from functions such as IT, finance and procurement.
  • Intent acceleration: rising research activity on topics aligned to your solution, indicating that an account is entering an active buying cycle.
  • Stage velocity: the time accounts take to move between defined stages, and where they stall.
  • Opportunity conversion: the proportion of progressing accounts that become qualified pipeline.

Together, these indicators show whether a programme is changing account behaviour, which is the outcome ABM exists to deliver.

Building a Progression-Led Scorecard

Adopting account progression requires marketing and sales to agree on stage definitions and on the signals that trigger movement between them. Without that agreement, progression becomes another marketing-only metric. HubSpot’s 2026 research lists sales and marketing alignment among the top challenges marketers face, which makes shared definitions a practical starting point rather than an afterthought.

Data quality is equally important. Only 65% of marketers in the same study report having high-quality audience data, and progression tracking is only as reliable as the account and contact records that sit beneath it.

Conclusion

Lead volume shows how busy a programme has been. Account progression shows whether it is working. As buying groups expand and budgets face closer scrutiny, organisations that measure ABM by account movement will be best placed to demonstrate its contribution to revenue.
